About the aPHR® Exam

The aPHR® (Associate Professional in Human Resources) exam is administered by the HR Certification Institute (HRCI®) and is the only HRCI credential that requires no prior HR work experience. The exam consists of 90 total multiple-choice questions — 65 scored operational questions and 25 unscored pretest questions — with a 2-hour time limit. Content spans six functional areas: HR Operations (38%), Recruitment and Selection (15%), Compensation and Benefits (14%), Human Resource Development and Retention (12%), Employee Relations (20%), and Compliance and Risk Management (1%). The exam is delivered year-round at Pearson VUE testing centers or via OnVUE online proctoring. Candidates must pay a $100 application fee plus a $300 exam fee, for a combined cost of $400. Once approved, candidates have 180 days to schedule and sit for the exam. The passing score is 500 on HRCI’s 100–700 scaled scoring system; HRCI reports a 71% aPHR pass rate as of December 31, 2025.
