The Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE®) exam is administered by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) and is the premier credential for anti-fraud professionals worldwide. Effective June 2, 2026, the exam transitioned from a four-section to a three-section structure based on the 2024 Job Task Analysis. The three sections are: Fraud Schemes and Financial Crimes (120 questions, 2.5 hours), Fraud Investigations and Legal Issues (120 questions, 2.5 hours), and Fraud Prevention and Deterrence (70 questions, 1.5 hours). Each section uses multiple-choice and True/False questions and is taken as a separate timed exam. The exam is closed-book and closed-notes. Once exam eligibility is activated, candidates have a 60-day window to schedule and complete all three sections. The exam is available via online remote proctoring through Prometric's ProProctor platform or in-person at Prometric testing centers worldwide. The CFE Exam Application fee is $480 and covers the first attempt at each section; retakes are $110 per failed section. Kaplan CertPrep's CFE Exam Prep is aligned to the June 2, 2026 exam structure.
