The FOA Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT®) exam is administered by the Fiber Optic Association and tests intermediate-level knowledge of fiber optic technology, installation, testing, splicing, and troubleshooting. The CFOT® exam includes both a written multiple-choice component and a hands-on practical assessment. The written exam covers fiber optic theory, cable types, connector types, installation practices, testing with OTDRs and power meters, and safety. The practical component tests hands-on skills including connector termination, splicing, and cable testing with live equipment. The FOA offers the CFOT® through its network of approved training providers, which typically deliver the certification through 2–3 day training courses that include both classroom instruction and lab work. There is no fixed national exam fee — costs vary by training provider. The CFOT® certification does not expire but continuing education is encouraged. Kaplan CertPrep’s CFOT® Exam Prep is built to cover all content areas of the current FOA CFOT® exam blueprint.
