About the Fiber Optics Installer (FOI) Exam

The ETA® International Fiber Optics Installer (FOI) exam is an ICAC-accredited certification for entry-level fiber optic installation technicians, administered by ETA® International. Candidates must complete a course at an ETA®-approved school, pay the exam fee, and pass a hands-on skills exam in addition to the written test. The exam consists of 75 multiple-choice and true/false questions with a 2-hour time limit. A passing score of 75% is required. Candidates who do not pass receive one free retake, which must be used within one year of the first exam session after a 30-day waiting period. The FOI certification is valid for four years, after which holders must renew through continuing education or re-examination. The exam fee varies by testing provider. The FOI exam tests 14 knowledge competency areas: (1) History of Fiber Optics and Broadband Access, (2) Principles of Fiber Optic Transmission, (3) Basic Principles of Light, (4) Optical Fiber Construction and Theory, (5) Optical Fiber Characteristics, (6) Fiber Optic Safety, (7) Fiber Optic Cables, (8) Splicing, (9) Connectors, (10) Fiber Optic Light Sources, (11) Fiber Optic Detectors and Receivers, (12) Cable Installation and Hardware, (13) Fiber Optic System Advantages, and (14) Test Equipment and Link/Cable Testing.
