The Firefighter I & II certification exam is based on NFPA 1001, Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications, published by the National Fire Protection Association. It is the nationally recognized standard for certifying firefighters at two progressive levels. Exams are administered by state fire academies accredited by Pro Board and/or IFSAC.
The written exam format varies by state, but typically consists of 100 multiple-choice questions for Firefighter I and 50 questions for Firefighter II. A combined Firefighter I/II exam is 150 questions. Most states require a 70% passing score within a 2-hour time limit.
