About the Registered Behavioral Technician (RBT®) Certification Exam

The Registered Behavioral Technician® (RBT®) exam is administered by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board® (BACB®) and certifies paraprofessionals who implement applied behavior analysis (ABA) programs under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst® (BCBA®). The exam consists of 75 multiple-choice questions — 70 scored questions and 5 unscored pilot items — with a 90-minute time limit. Questions are drawn from the six task list areas in the RBT® Task List (2nd edition): Measurement (10 items), Skill Acquisition (24 items), Behavior Reduction (12 items), Documentation and Reporting (10 items), Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice (8 items), and Ethics (6 items). Skill Acquisition is the highest-weighted domain. The passing score is 68% (approximately 48 of 70 scored questions). The exam is delivered at Pearson VUE testing centers year-round. To be eligible, candidates must be 18 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, complete a 40-hour training based on the RBT® Task List, and pass a competency assessment conducted by a BCBA® or BCaBA®. The RBT® credential must be renewed annually. The exam fee is $45 per attempt. Kaplan CertPrep’s RBT® Certification Prep covers all six task list areas with 800 practice questions, 3 full-length practice tests, and 300 flashcards.
