The ServSafe® Food Protection Manager certification is administered by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) and accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) under Conference for Food Protection (CFP) standards. It is the most widely recognized food manager certification in the United States, accepted by health departments in all 50 states.
The exam consists of 90 multiple-choice questions (80 scored, 10 unscored pilot questions) with a 2-hour time limit. A passing score is 75% — 60 out of 80 scored questions. Testing is available year-round at Pearson VUE testing centers, online with a live remote proctor, and at in-person proctored classroom sessions. Candidates may attempt the exam up to 4 times per 12-month period.
The 2026 exam reflects the ServSafe® 9th Edition content blueprint, which introduced sesame as the 9th major allergen, elevated Active Managerial Control (AMC) and Food Safety Culture as exam themes, and added new content on digital temperature monitoring, third-party delivery food safety, and the Employees FIRST food defense framework.
