Understanding the SHRM-CP® Exam Structure
The SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP®) exam is a pivotal step for HR professionals who want to validate their knowledge, skills, and abilities in the human resources field. The exam is developed by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and is designed to test both behavioral competencies and HR functional knowledge.
The SHRM-CP® exam is a computer-based test that consists of 160 multiple-choice questions, of which 130 are scored and 30 are unscored pretest questions. These questions are presented in a randomized order, and examinees are not told which questions are scored. You will have four hours to complete the exam.

Types of Questions on the SHRM-CP® Exam
The SHRM-CP® exam features two primary types of questions: knowledge-based and situational judgment items.

SHRM-CP® Exam Content Areas
The SHRM-CP® exam is divided into two major sections that align with the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge™ (SHRM BASK™):
- Behavioral Competencies (50% of the exam): focuses on leadership, communication, consultation, relationship management, and ethical practice
- HR Knowledge Domains (50% of the exam): covers people, organization, workplace, and strategy topics such as talent acquisition, employee engagement, workforce management, and compliance
Scoring, Results, and Preparing for the SHRM-CP® Exam
The SHRM-CP® exam uses a scaled scoring system. Your raw score is converted into a scaled score ranging from 120 to 200. To pass, you must achieve a minimum scaled score of 200. Exam results are typically available within three to four weeks after the testing window closes.
