The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) administers the licensing exams required by all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands for social work practice. There are multiple exam levels — Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical — each corresponding to a different stage of a social worker's career. You cannot practice social work independently without passing the exam required by your state licensing board.
The ASWB exams test knowledge across four content areas: Human Development and Behavior, Assessment and Intervention Planning, Interventions with Clients, and Professional Relationships and Ethics. The Clinical-level exam (required for the LCSW credential) also tests advanced clinical judgment and diagnostic reasoning. Pass rates vary by exam level, but the Clinical exam has historically had a first-time pass rate between 70% and 80% — meaning roughly one in four candidates fails on the first attempt.
Kaplan offers separate Prep Products for the BSW, MSW, and LCSW exam levels, with over 1,650 practice questions across the three products. Each question is mapped to the ASWB content outline and includes detailed answer explanations that reinforce clinical reasoning and ethical decision-making. At $29 per product, Kaplan delivers comprehensive, exam-aligned prep that helps social work graduates pass on their first attempt.
